Digital Photos Show the Evolution of Halloween Costumes

The beginnings of Halloween as we know it began with children dressing up as supernatural characters including ghosts, witches and vampires, and has since been influenced by the current pop culture, and more specifically, characters based off of movie action characters such as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Spiderman.

Larsen Digital Services, a film scanning service located just beneath Ben Lomond Peak, sees all sorts of moments from around the world, especially the treasured moments that arise from the holidays.  Through the millions of frames digitized, trends and evolutions of traditions have been noticed, specifically the transformation of the Halloween costume.

While the origins of Halloween began at the time of the Celtics, it became the community centered holiday it is today around the 1930’s.  The beginnings of Halloween as we know it began with children dressing up as supernatural characters including ghosts, witches and vampires, and has since been influenced by the current pop culture, and more specifically, characters based off of movie action characters such as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Spiderman.

"I have noticed that when I take pictures of my kids each year, that it is very telling of the things that my kids were interested in at the time. It is an evolution of not only the times, but their personalities as well."

Kristin Harding, a mother of two living in Utah, said of capturing photos and video of her kids on Halloween.

“I have noticed that when I take pictures of my kids each year, that it is very telling of the things that my kids were interested in at the time.  It is an evolution of not only the times, but their personalities as well.”

Having looked at pictures through time, it has been noticed that costumes originated using items and accessories already owned, or clothing that was hand made.  Now, Halloween has evolved to be a big economical expense, demanding money spent on candy and professionally made costumes.  After 100 years of Halloween being in America, it will be an interesting tale to see the traditions of Halloween in the years to come.
